Calendar for Organic Gardening – September
Water
- Deeply and infrequently.
 
Prune
- Summer flowering perennials need spent blooms removed.
 - Surface tree roots need to be removed but no more than 20% of the root system per year
 - Wisterias that failed to bloom need the roots pruned..
 
Fertilize
- Use organic fertilizer on all planting areas (10-20lbs./1,000 sq ft.); especially peppers and tomatoes.
 - All planting areas and lawns need to be foliar fed with Extreme Juice.
 
Pest Control
- Treat grub worms with beneficial nematodes.
 - Spray bacillus thuringiensis for cabage loopers on cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts.
 - Garlic tea or water blast takes care of aphids on tender, new fall growth. Adding 2 oz. molasses to gallon of spray is better.
 - Release ladybugs.
 - Dust fire ant mounds with diatomaceous earth then release beneficial nematodes.
 - Black spot and powdery mildew on roses can be treated with Extreme Juice plus 1 cup skim milk per gallon of spray.
 - Kill white flies with insecticidal soap.
 - If plants are suffering from iron chlorosis use chelated iron and sulfer, or Texas Greensand.
 
Plant
- Remember plant your wildflower seeds if you haven’t already- you have from late September to early November.
 - By early September finish warm season lawn grass planting.
 - Time to transplant established spring flowering bulbs – iris and daylilies.
 - Perennials.
 - Cool season grasses and leafy root crops – carrots, turnips and beets.
 
Odds ‘n Ends
- Leave grass clippings on lawn when you do your weekly mowing.
 - Turn the compost pile.
 - Remove bad fruit on citrus.
 - Start refrigerating tulips and hyacinth bulbs.
